HOW TO SURVIVE A FINNISH NOVEMBER

HOW TO SURVIVE A FINNISH NOVEMBER

You get one extra hour. What would you do with it?

OPENING SCENE: The team are talking about how by 7pm, Helsinki is pitch dark. Not evening dark. Middle-of-the-night dark. We’re sad. We’re stunned. Even though this happens every year.

We’re also bracing ourselves, because on Sunday the clocks go back one hour and the dark will arrive at six, right as we close the store. After that comes November, Finland’s very own horror month, when the light just disappears, and we wait for snow to come and rescue us.

Tara asks everyone a question to cheer them up: if you got a magical extra hour, what would you do with it?

TARA: I'll go first. Sleep.
(She already sleeps 10 to 12 hours every night and calls it her superpower. Apparently she could do with more powers.)

ANTTON: Sauna.
(For an HOUR, you ask? Yes. We sit in there for an hour, have drinks, contemplate life, and why we live in a dark, cold country.)

MAIJA: Skate, and finally learn the frontside ollie.
(When you have a passion, darkness is just bad lighting.)

RIITTA: Simply be grateful for the extra hour to be alive.
(Bless her.)

SINI: Just relax.
(The most radical answer in the store. Like... do NOTHING?)

JAANA: Float in the ocean.
(Probably not in our ocean. She would freeze to death. In black swimwear, naturally.)

ALEXANDRA: Take my mum out for cake.
(Yes, sugar is always there for you in hard times. As is your mum.)

KALLE: Easy. Sit right here and wait for the next customer I get to talk to.
(He won’t be sitting long. He never is.)

November is coming. Have cake. Relax and take care of yourself.

And for heaven’s sake, protect your boots like Kalle does. Get the OSLO Galosh HERE.
