Barefoot mules - slip-on comfort with a wide toe box

Barefoot-style mules you can slip on and forget: flexible sole, roomy toe box, leather that ages beautifully.
Barefoot mules are the hands-free end of the VIBAe range: leather slip-on mules and loafer-mule hybrids in unisex sizes 35–48, each with a wide toe box, a flexible low-drop sole and an open back. They suit anyone who wants roomy everyday shoes they can step into at the door. Choose on forefoot shape first, because fit across the toes decides the rest.
How do you choose barefoot mules?
Barefoot mules are backless slip-on shoes with a wide toe box, a thin flexible sole and little or no heel drop. They suit anyone who wants roomy, hands-free shoes for everyday wear.
Four checks, in order:
- Toe box width and foot shape. Look at your forefoot, not your heel: if your toes splay when you stand unshod, wide toe box mules give them room. Barefoot shoes for wide feet work through the shape of the last, not through stretch you earn.
- Sole flexibility and drop. A low-drop sole keeps heel and forefoot much closer in height than a conventional shoe — VIBAe’s Carbon Step™ footbed sits at 11 mm under the heel and 7 mm at the front, a 4 mm drop, and a sole you can roll into a curve in one hand bends where your foot bends. Coming out of cushioned trainers, flexible sole shoes ask more of your feet.
- Leather type and how it moulds. Vegetable-tanned leather softens over the first weeks and takes the shape of your own foot. Smooth leather mules read tidier with tailoring; woven uppers breathe better through summer.
- Heel-free fit and vamp hold. With no counter behind you, backless barefoot shoes rely on the vamp across the instep. If you walk fast or spend the day on stairs, closed-back barefoot loafers hold the foot more securely.
Two trade-offs: a mule holds the foot less than a laced shoe, so your stride shortens on rough ground, and a thin flexible sole takes an adjustment period while your feet take back work your old shoes were doing.

Barefoot mules for women, men and minimalist styles
VIBAe runs one unisex collection in sizes 35–48, with no separate women's last. Anyone shopping barefoot mules women's styles picks from the same shoes, the same wide toe box and the same low-drop construction as everyone else, then takes the number matching their foot length.
The ROMA mules are the slip-on silhouette at the centre of the collection; Loafers & Mules is the wider category if a closed back suits your week better.
Minimalist mules here mean pared-back Nordic shapes with clean lines and no visible branding, worn as easily under wide trousers as with denim. For minimalist leather slip-ons in a smooth finish, ZUMA leather is the quieter option; ROMA woven moves more air in heat. All are handmade in Portugal at a family-run factory.
How do you handle sizing, break-in and leather care?
Most people wear their usual VIBAe size. If you're unsure how to size barefoot shoes, one measurement settles it: stand on paper, mark your longest toe and your heel, measure in centimetres, then compare that figure with the size chart.
Our journal piece on how to get the correct fit with VIBAe shoes walks through the method. Room at the toes should never mean slack at the front: the vamp has to sit close across the instep, or the shoe slides as you push off. Give the first fortnight shorter wears, especially if these are your first everyday barefoot shoes for work.
Wondering how to care for leather mules? Brush off dust, condition when the surface looks dry, and rotate pairs so each one dries out fully. When the Carbon Step™ footbed wears through before the upper, you replace the footbed rather than the shoe, and outgrown pairs can move on through Pre-Loved resale. If foot pain persists, see a health professional. The store shows live sizing, stock and prices.

Frequently asked questions
What makes a mule barefoot-style?
A mule counts as barefoot-style when it combines a wide toe box, a thin flexible sole and little or no heel drop, so the foot sits close to level and the toes can splay. The open back makes it a mule; the sole and toe shape make it barefoot.
Do barefoot mules stay on your feet when you walk?
They stay on through normal walking when the vamp sits firmly across the instep, but a backless shoe holds less than a laced one. Expect a slightly shorter, quieter stride on stairs and uneven ground.
What size should I order in barefoot mules?
Most people order their usual size. Measure your longer foot in centimetres and compare it with the size chart. Your foot should fill the footbed from heel to toe, with no gap ahead of your longest toe, so between sizes go up a size. The leather will gently stretch where needed as it moulds. Size up only if you wear thick socks or prefer a looser feel.
Can you wear barefoot mules with socks or all day at work?
Yes to both. Thin and mid-weight socks work well, while very thick socks tighten the vamp. For full days, build up gradually if flexible soles are new to you, and rotate with a second pair.
